Also known as golden fleece and fibre of kings, cashmere is made from the fleece of a particular species of goat that inhabits the inaccessible and lonely highlands of Asia – mainly located in China, Mongolia, Iran and Afghanistan – or Turkey, India and Russia. Due to the hostile climatic and environmental conditions in which they live, goats develop a characteristic fleece that appears long and thick on the surface, with relatively coarse fibres called girdles. Yet, as in any self-respecting mystery, the real treasure is hidden from view: it is in the undercoat that the most precious part is found, called the ‘Duvet’ or ‘Borra’, consisting of a soft, smooth and very fine down. It is from this, and only from this, that true cashmere is born, a noble and ancient fibre that Kangra works with skill to create unique, comfortable and exclusive garments.
